Recently I bought a new mobile in the US, by the Grace of God. It is called MyTouch 3G. It is originally called HTC Magic and it comes with Android 1.5(recently updated to 1.6). I thought of buying an iphone. But thank God, I didn't. Though it might lack the glossy finish of the iphone UI, it is still better except for some hiccups.
Android Market contains a lot of applications. Market is the android version of iphone's Appstore. The best thing is that, there are a lot of free applications which helps me do easily. In fact, I don't feel the need for buying a laptop. The downside is that you need to buy dataplan which costs you 25$. But still its a good deal, because you get unlimited internet at super speeds.
Some of the applications I use frequently are Google Maps, GMail, Twitroid (Android client for twitter), GTalk, of course the music player, Youtube application. In fact there are applications to list the bus timings and train timings. So if I need to go to church in San Francisco, I will use Google Maps to get the public transit directions, double check with the timings in Caltrain application and VTA application and thats it..
